What's the best comment system for WordPress?

I am making a new WordPress site where the content is highly "commentable". What is the best comment system for WordPress, making it as easy as possible for the visitor to leave comments? I also want to avoid comment spam, if possible.

Should I just stick with the WordPress default comment system, or is there anything better out there?

    Hello Bjarne!

I don't allow comments on my Wordpress sites but I think
you will be fine using their default system. You can set it
up so that you can approve comments before they post,
if you would want to do that. There might be something
better but you don't want to bog your site down with too
    many plugins.

If it's "comment-able" content like you say then I assume it's topical, viral style content which is viewed by first time visitors?

If this is the case, then honestly I would stick with the default Wordpress comment system. Here are some tips for this strategy.

    1) Install Askimet - This allows you to accept comments without moderation (promotes discussion) but minimises the risk of spam.

    2) If you are online multiple times per day, allow un-moderated comments. The more you are online the quicker you can delete spam.

    3) If you're not able to moderate comments quickly, you can install a Disqus plugin which is good for blocking spam, but your readers will need to register a Disqus account before commenting (which reduces the ammount of comments).

I would definitely recommend Disqus (my own experience)

I would stick with the default comment system. It works great for me. Simple and clutter free comment system.

I think you should consider CommentLuv. It's a commenting tool that is mostly used by authority bloggers and I hope you'd find it indispensable for your blog as well.

If you decide to go with Disqus, there is a better plugin than the official one. It's called "Disqus Conditional Load".
Another alternative is wpDiscuz. Although sounds similar, it has nothing to do with Disqus.

I use wpDiscuz. I like the options and the floating comment bubble. However, since the update over one month ago, I haven't seen a single comment even though I'm receiving more traffic.

It seems that clicking on the comment bubble automatically directs me to the comment box, which is great. However, clicking directly onto the comment box does nothing unless I am logged into Wordpress. No one else seems to be reporting this limitation so I suppose it's some kind of plug-in conflict. Hate when that happens.

Anyway, using plug-ins will provide more options, but may not always work as intended!

I would have tried it on a testing site to see if that's a real limitation, or a plugin conflict.
But not getting comments at all is a serious issue to investigate.

Agreed. I don't have a testing site, nor do I know how to trouble shoot the issue without simply commenting myself while logged in and out. I am able to do both, so there must be some other limiting factors for guests. I deactivated it and had a few comments show up in less than a days time. I guess I'll stick with the basic system for now.

You can never tell with precision what will come of any new venture . That is why I recommend you stick to the old system in the meantime.

The default system sounds like the best option for an evolving website. It is simplistic and easy to use. If you want something else, then you can go for Askimet\ too. Its really good.

I use the default commenting system. It is straightforward, easy to use, and doesn't require an account.
